In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Core Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
