Trump's System of Retribution and Reward

Trump's voracious desire for retribution has swiftly morphed into a structured framework. Within the twelve months, the chief executive's anger and caprices have adopted the guise of government actions similar to reminiscent to earlier repressive systems. Government officials who fail to comply are promptly dismissed and replaced by loyalists. Critical leaders who question him face legal action, judicial process and penalties. Critics have been designated under executive orders as “unpatriotic”, “against faith communities” and “anti-capitalist”, and threatened with prosecution as “terrorists”.

Government Institutions Remade

Each case involving targeting of critics and protection for his allies displays its own unique features. Yet, despite their individual form, they represent manifestations of what has arisen as a deliberate approach. Those events are far from random. His removal of Department of Justice attorneys and FBI officials, alongside his appointment of loyalists in high-level posts, began quickly, soon assumed a consistency, and has now been formed into a structure. The justice department and the Federal Bureau have been restructured into political bodies under Trump's explicit command to carry out his directives. Wrongdoing has been made routine. This is the apparatus of revenge.

Leadership is preoccupied with penalizing the leader's alleged enemies than they are with defending our country's safety.

Internal the Apparatus

The origin of this system has been revealed in the lawsuit of multiple previous high-ranking law enforcement executives filed in September in the US district court in DC against top official Kash Patel and attorney general another official for illegal termination in “a initiative of revenge against the officials for what Defendants deemed to be a refusal to exhibit proper political loyalty”. In the complaint that a former acting director, the previous acting FBI director, recounts a exchange in which Patel “publicly confessed the impropriety of his behavior”.

Driscoll had tried to shield law enforcement officers from being dismissed, the lawsuit alleges. The director informed him that “they” – understood by the official to be the White House and justice department – had instructed him to dismiss everyone who they considered as having been involved in a law enforcement case against him. The filing goes on: “The director stated that he had to terminate the individuals his superiors told him to fire, because his capacity to hold his own job relied on the removal of the agents who handled investigations involving the President. The director explained that there was no way he or him could do to stop these or any other terminations, because ‘the FBI tried to place the leader in jail and he recalls it clearly.’” After the official advised Patel he was breaking the FBI's own internal rules, he reportedly said “he understood that and he knew the nature of the immediate dismissals were almost certainly illegal”.

Broad Impact

Following Patel's reported acknowledgment to him, the DoJ and the law enforcement agency have been gutted and repurposed for the administration's system of punishment. Multiple of the bureau's senior executives were terminated or forced out in the first days of the government. About thousands of legal professionals at the justice department have taken a “voluntary departure plan”. At least multiple government attorneys, including those in the southern district of New York, quit in dissent over what they viewed as political interference in dropping the corruption case against the local official, Eric Adams, in return for his assistance with the administration's Immigration and Customs Enforcement detentions of migrants. The public integrity section of the department, which oversees ethical violations, has been cut down to minimal staff. The equality section has been devastated: 70% of its personnel has resigned. 33% of top officials at the department have resigned. The section upholding environmental law has seen departures of half its management.

Incentives and Penalties

Concerning the legal matter, the interim prosecutor for the NY office, Danielle Sassoon, stepped down in dissent against what she described as the “quid pro quo”. A key figure, the president's “enforcement chief,” appeared as the agent with him on Fox News to announce: “Should he fail to deliver, I will return in NYC.”. And, a former official, formerly the senior DoJ official and a past legal representative, who arranged the deal, was given an judicial position, a possible stepping stone to the supreme court.

The president's immunity for offenses perpetrated while in government, awarded by the unprecedented decision of the Republican majority on the highest court, thus preventing his legal action over the January 6 insurrection and safeguarding his public standing for the 2024 election, is the basis on which he depends to shield his stalwarts. With such immunity, he has been liberated to authorize wrongdoing. The impact of the judicial ruling infuses his government and the GOP completely. The legal case has escalated. Similar to Richard Nixon's legal adviser he commented about the Watergate
