The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public across the country,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be ended before then.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups filed for a court injunction to block the government from implementing any layoffs during the funding gap. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any federal employees had been brought back to execute staff reductions.

A report argued that a government shutdown limits the ability of the administration to carry out firings, referencing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

These terminations took place on the same day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck for the final days of September but excluding the start of the current month, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate said. The flight regulators, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
